Akwasidae, which is celebrated across the Asante Kingdom, is one of the adored festivals for the Asantes.

It is celebrated on the first Sunday after every 40 days on the Asante calendar for people from all walks of life to have the occasional opportunity of paying homage to the Asante King.

Last Sunday’s Adae Kese, like other Akwasidae events, serves as the platform for pledging allegiance to the kingdom and to affirm loyalty to the occupant of the Golden Stool, which represents the unity and embodiment of all Asantes.

The arrival of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to the durbar grounds last Sunday, was an exciting sight to watch.

Riding in a palanquin clad in his rich kente cloth, adorn in golden regalia and accompanied by traditional drumming amid dancing as well as firing of musketry amidst pomp and pageantry.

He was welcomed with a standing ovation by dignitaries to the grounds, as children were seen on the shoulders of the elderly as they tried to take a glimpse of the historical moment.

As usual, most of the people presented drinks and other gifts to the occupant of the Golden Stool, which was announced to the hearing of the large gathering.

Some fortunate ones got the privilege to shake hands with King.

Present at the grounds included politicians, ambassadors, businessmen/women, and the clergy.
