Ghana Post to reclaim lands from encroachers

The Ghana Post Company Limited has warned encroachers on its lands to evacuate to make way for its planned developmental projects or face demolition.

The company, which has plots of land in the country, especially in Accra, has lost close to 95 per cent of its lands to encroachers.

The lands include 92 acres at Bubuashie and Darkuman; more than 800 acres around the Pantang Hospital at Adenta and others at Lashibi, all in Accra.

The Head of Estate Development of the company, Mr Charles Asiedu, made this known when the company took some journalists to the land at Bubuashie in Accra yesterday to show them the level of encroachment.

Demolition exercise

He said the company was going to embark on a demolition exercise beginning from the Bubuashie land which has been occupied by mechanical shops, cattle farms, football parks, churches, and other unauthorised activities and structures.

He said encroachers on the Bubuashie land have been given prior notices since 2007, but they had not heeded to the various warnings and notices.

“The latest warning was in June this year when we gave them notices to evacuate the land, but as of now, only a few encroachers, especially churches have left, he explained.

To ensure an effective exercise, Mr Asiedu said that the company had collaborated with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and security services to carry out the exercise very soon.

He indicated that the tour was to alert the public to the issues before the demolition to avoid any public outcry.

Earlier at a press conference before the tour, the Managing Director of Ghana Post, Mr Eric Yao, said the company was planning initiatives that could fetch the company additional revenue to complement the postal services, hence it needed its lands for the development projects.

With partnership from the private sector, he said, the initiatives included expansion of their services and products to include internet services, providing door-to-door postal services, as well as real estate development.

He explained that revamping the company had become necessary to position it to compete in this era of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and also make it more profitable.
