Amewu breaks parliamentary jinx in Hohoe

The Minister of Energy, Mr John Peter Amewu, has clinched a historic victory as the first Member of Parliament-elect for the New Patriotic Party in the Hohoe Constituency.

Mr Amewu polled 26,952 against his major contender, Prof Margaret Kweku of the NDC who polled 21,821.

The new feat has broken the seemingly infinite grip of the National Democratic Congress on the Hohoe Constituency.

Mr Amewu who exuded confidence throughout the process, earlier predicted a landslide victory for the NPP in the polls.

The 48 year old politician told Graphic Online that Hohoe was determined to end the party's Parliamentary drought and bring to an end the monopoly of the National Democratic Congress.

Presidential

The NDC however retained control over the Constituency by polling 33,542 (69.40%) against the NPP's 14,389 votes which represented, 29.80% with 416 votes (0.9%) shared among the other parties.

Performance

The NPP gave a sterling performance by increasing it votes gained in the 2016 election (6,869) by 7,520.

The NDC while maintaining it's grip on the region however slipped by 1,575 votes less than it performed in 2016, from 35,117 to 33,542.

Highest turn out recorded

The constituency also saw an impressive voter turnout of 83.3 per cent, the highest turnout to be recorded in the area. Out of a voter population of 59228, 49319 voter turnout was recorded.

Mr Amewu however described the performance of the party as a "tsunami".

"The 30-year history has been broken and the people of Ghana will now understand that Hohoe is the gateway when it comes to democracy", he said.

Jubilation

Meanwhile, huge crowds of jubilant supporters thronged the streets of Hohoe minutes after results from the various polling centres were announced as if to preempt the impending victory.

Profile

Mr Amewu was a one time Municipal Chief Executive of the Hohoe Municipality, after a failed parliamentary bid in 2004 and 2008, his role as the former Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP was credited to improving upon the gains of the party especially in the 2026 general election.

Mr Amewu who is married with 3  children is hoping to revive the vibrancy of the constituency having already initiated several development projects in the area.
