AngloGold Ashanti urges calm following fatal clash with illegal miners in Obuasi

AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Limited has called for calm following a deadly confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel at its secured site in Obuasi.

The violent clash, which occurred late on January 18, 2025, at the northern section of the company's Obuasi concession, left seven illegal miners dead and several others injured, including a security officer.

In a statement issued on January 19, AngloGold Ashanti confirmed the situation had been brought under control, assuring the public that the mine’s operations remain unaffected.

The company reiterated its commitment to working with local authorities to address the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“On the evening of January 18, an incident occurred within the fenced operational area in the northern part of the Obuasi concession. A large group of armed illegal miners attempted to forcibly gain unauthorized access to mine infrastructure. Authorities mobilized to defend against this attack and ensure the safety of employees and the surrounding community. The situation at the mine is currently calm, and we are working closely with the authorities. Our primary concern remains the safety and health of all employees and members of the community directly impacted by this incident.”,  the statement read.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in a separate statement, said their personnel acted in self-defense after being attacked by the illegal miners, who reportedly used locally manufactured firearms and other weapons. GAF confirmed the deaths of seven miners and injuries to others, including a member of the security forces.

The tragic incident has reignited calls for stronger measures to combat illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. Kwaku Kwarteng, Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, condemned the violence and called for a thorough investigation into the events.

“This incident underscores the escalating dangers of illegal mining in Obuasi and across the country,” Kwarteng stated. “We must ensure accountability and take decisive steps to address the root causes of these violent clashes.”

According to GAF, the confrontation began around 11:00 PM when a group of approximately 60 illegal miners breached the security perimeter and attempted to access the Deep Decline area of the mine. The miners, armed with locally made rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other tools, allegedly opened fire on military personnel when confronted.

Kwarteng expressed confidence in the ongoing investigations by local police and military authorities and called for their findings to be shared with President John Dramani Mahama to ensure transparency and justice.

“I have engaged the Divisional and Municipal Police Commands, who have assured me that thorough investigations are underway. I also expect the Military Command to conduct a comprehensive review of the events leading to this tragic incident,” he noted. “It is imperative that the findings be presented to President Mahama to ensure full accountability and reinforce public trust in our security agencies.”
