The scholarship will cover their school fees and basic needs while in school but PTA dues will be paid by their parents.

The beneficiaries, who are mainly brilliant, needy students, were selected from the Keta Senior High School, the Zion College, the Anlo Senior High School and the Abor Senior High School.

Since its establishment in 2009, the fund has supported 65 students.

To ensure that the students excelled academically, they were made to sign a bond to be consistent in their academic performance or their scholarship would be withdrawn.

The fund, which was established under the auspices of the Awomefia, Torgbui Sri III, and the Keta Municipal Assembly, also distributed 2,500 exercise books and 14 laptops to some selected basic schools in the Anlo State.

It is currently constructing a six-classroom block for the Gbatsivi community, also in the municipality.

Criteria for selection

The criteria for selection for a scholarship includes good results in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and being brilliant, needy. Priority is given to female students studying science.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic at a ceremony to present the scholarships, a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairperson of the Public Services Commission, Mrs Bridget Katsriku, said the fund was sponsoring the education of students in second cycle schools while building infrastructure such as classroom blocks at the basic school level.

“Our funds are not enough to extend it to the tertiary level. Basic education is virtually free so our focus is on senior high school students,” she said.

Mrs Katsriku said the performance of the beneficiaries had been good and most of them had either continued to tertiary institutions or were waiting to do so.

Appeal

She appealed to all indigenes of the Anlo Municipality to contribute to the trust, and added that “if we all contribute at least GH¢10 a year, we could raise a lot to meet our targets”.

The chairman of the board, Prof. Victor P. Y. Gadzekpo, appealed to corporate institutions to support the fund to raise the standard of education in the municipality.

“Those managing the fund are persons of integrity and will ensure that it  is used for its intended purpose,” he assured.

A beneficiary and second-year student of the Keta Senior High School, Angelo Denoo, who could not hide his joy, said “I never thought I would receive it. It will help ease the financial burden at home and in school. It means a lot to me and my family and would motivate me to learn. I thank God for it.”
