He was escorting market women in a bus from Kwame Danso to Atebubu when the armed robbers suddenly emerged from the bush and started shooting.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent Maama Arhin told the Daily Graphic that the incident happened between 6.30 am and 7.00 am between Bantama and Garadima.

He explained that Constable Edu was seated at the front cabin of the bus full of market women who were on their way to the Atebubu Market.

Supt Arhin added that the armed robbers took the rifle of the constable and fled into the bush without robbing the passengers.

“The police has mounted a search for the robbers”, he said and appealed to the general public to provide tips to ensure that the robbers are arrested.

Reports

Even though the police say reports about the incident were scanty, sources from the area indicate that apart from the constable, two others who received gunshots were receiving treatment at the Atebubu Hospital.

The reports added that the deceased engaged one of the armed robbers in a shootout but four others emerged from the bush to kill him.

Eyewitness account

According to an eyewitness, who is also a commercial bus driver, the incident happened around 6:40 am Tuesday.

The eyewitness, Owusu Achiaw, narrating the incident said, he was heading to Kwame Danso from Atebubu when someone flagged him to stop because there were armed robbers on the road.

“But when I looked at the man, I thought he had a mental problem so I did not stop. But a few minutes after that, I saw another person shouting the same thing so I stopped. After stopping I saw a vehicle coming ahead of us with speed with the boot and side door opened. The driver came to park close to a mango tree close to where I had parked. I approached him and asked what the matter was. He was wailing and told me that a policeman had been killed.”

“He explained that armed robbers attacked them and a policeman in the car was shot. He said the police was sitting on the front seat when the incident occurred and he was shot dead while other passengers were robbed of their monies, mobile phones and other valuables,” Owusu Achiaw narrated.
