In their quest to support quality healthcare delivery and keep children in its catchment area in school, authorities of Asokwa Children’s Hospital have registered 1,246 pupils in two basic schools in Kumasi under the biometric National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The pupils of the beneficiary schools — the Asokwa Presbyterian and Kaase M/A Basic schools in the Kumasi Metropolis were registered at a total cost of GH¢5,000.
The gesture, according to the authorities, was in line with the hospital’s objective of motivating parents to seek quality healthcare for their children.
Briefing The Mirror about the initiative, the Asokwa Hospital Administrative Manager, Mr Prince Prempeh Gyamfi, said because of financial difficulties, some parents were unable to register their children for them to get quality healthcare when they fell sick, a situation that compounds the sickness and leads to lost of lives.
According to Mr Gyamfi, malaria and diarrhoea were the common diseases that had been afflicting children within the catchment area, thus denying them the opportunity to focus on their academic works.
He gave the assurance that they would renew the NHIS of the pupils annually to enable them to seek regular healthcare in order to keep them in school.
He also promised that the gesture would be extended to other schools in their catchment area to improve academic work.
Prior to the registration of the pupils, the authorities of the hospital also donated buckets, quantities of disinfectants and detergents to the two schools with the view to inculcating the culture of hand washing in them.
