Among those honoured were five teachers selected from private schools. The ceremony was on the theme, “The teacher, an essential tool for human resource development.”

The awards were presented to the teachers for their selfless service and dedication towards the development of education in their respective schools and the nation as a whole.

Those who have been in the profession for more than 10 years and met the criteria were presented with a refrigerator, while those below 10 years were presented with microwave ovens in addition to certificates.

Adequate planning

The Acting Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mrs Elizabeth De-Souza, commended the teachers for their efforts in improving education in the municipality.

She, however, deplored the negative practice by some teachers who spent most of their time outside the classroom and advised them to refrain from such acts and improve their performance.

Commenting on the theme, she said it explained the key role played by teachers in the lives of the students and the nation.

Collective responsibility

A Director at the Weija Educational Directorate, Dr Kwame Odei-Tettey, said the provision of quality education was a shared responsibility for all stakeholders in the education sector, to enhance the full and total development of the potential, talents, aptitudes, skills and moral values of the child.

He said quality education could successfully be achieved through the combined efforts of all the key stakeholders in the educational sector, including the government, parents, traditional rulers, religious bodies and opinion leaders.

Infrastructural development

In his remarks, the Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, said education played a crucial role in the development of every nation, stressing that the government was committed to giving education the needed attention to promote that objective.

He said the assembly had completed a three-unit classroom block at Aavornyokpe and another six-unit classroom block at Oblogo, while work was going on on a single-storey 12-unit classroom block each at Amanfro and Bortianor.

In her welcome address, a Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Margaret Frimpong Kore, expressed her appreciation to the government and the municipal assembly for instituting the annual awards scheme to motivate teachers.

Giving an overview of education in the municipality, she said the municipality had 232 schools, 1,321 teachers and 36,472 students.
She, therefore, urged teachers to not rest on their oars but gear themselves up to improve the lives of the Ghanaian child.
