Benchema-Oseikojokrom road works begin

Rehabilitation work has commenced on the 78-kilometre Benchema Junction- Oseikojokrom road in the Western Region.

The untarred international road, which links Ghana and Cote d’ Ivoire and connects about 50 major cocoa producing communities in the Juabeso and Bia districts, has for many years remained impassable, especially during rainy seasons.

As the first phase of the project, the first 15 kilometres, starting from the Benchema Junction to Nsinsem, will undergo mechanical stabilisation, double sealing and surface dressing to make it motorable all year round.

Mr Godfred Kwaku Andoh, Managing Director of MIDWEST contract works limited, the road building firm engaged on the project, announced last Tuesday when Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemana,

Minister of Roads and Highways inspected progress of work. According to him, the rehabilitation work, which started in January this year, will be completed next year.

Mr Andoh said that although his company had not been paid for work done so far, it was poised to do an excellent job within the scheduled period and commended  the Bank of Africa for its tremendous support for the company.

The minister said the government was financing the first phase but hinted that the remaining stretch was likely to be funded with a grant  from the Dutch government.

He said negotiations between the governments of Ghana and the Netherlands were far advanced.

Alhaji Sulemana commended the company for the work done so far and advised it to maintain the work rate and standards.
