Emmanuel Agyei Nyarko, a head-porter, who appeared before an Accra Magistrate Court pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing.
The court, presided over by Mr James Kojo Bota, granted Nyarko bail in the sum of GH¢1,800 with one surety.
The facts of the case as presented by Sergeant Lois Konadu were that on March 8, 2016 at about 2:00 p.m., Awal Ibrahim, a student, went to the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to have his phone repaired when he saw Nyarko open a certain man’s bag from behind and remove his two mobile phones.
Ibrahim drew the victim’s attention to the theft but before the man could take action, Nyarko jumped on a motorbike and ordered the rider to speed off towards Accra.
The prosecutor said Ibrahim also picked another motorbike and chased the rider and Nyarko.
On reaching the Adabraka Police Station area, Nyarko jumped off the motorbike and jumped over the fence wall to the Citi FM area.
Sgt Konadu said Ibrahim continued to chase Nyarko and with the help of a passer-by arrested him.
She said in order to avoid detection, Nyarko threw away the phones but Ibrahim picked them up and took Nyarko to the police station to assist in investigations.
Ibrahim was not present at the court when the case was called; meanwhile, the prosecutor indicated that efforts were being made to trace the owner of the phones.
