Taxi driver killed by armed robbers at Tantra Hill

A taxi driver was last Saturday shot dead at Tantra Hill Lumba Down near Accra in what the police have described as an attempted robbery.

The police suspect that some robbers attempted to snatch the taxi and the driver, who might have struggled with them, was killed in the process.

The body of the man, who is yet to be identified, was found in the taxi, a Hyundai Elantra with registration number GW 5426-14, with bloodstains all over it.

The Mile Seven District Police Command is looking for the owner of the vehicle or anyone with information that could lead to the identification of the driver.

Eyewitness account 

An eyewitness account indicated that the robbers were three in number.

The eyewitness, who lives in the area, claimed that he heard some gunshots around 11:30 p.m. that night.

After the gunshots, the witness said, he peeped through his window, along with some members of the household, and saw three men struggling with the taxi driver in an attempt to collect the ignition key from him.

“During the struggle, we heard another gunshot and we immediately called the police for assistance, since nobody could go close to the scene to find out what was happening.

“After some time, we saw the suspects carrying the victim from the driver’s seat to the back seat. By then the police patrol team was close and so the suspects sat in the taxi and sped off,” the eyewitness said.

Car abandoned 

The suspects later abandoned the vehicle, together with the taxi driver, who had been shot in the chest, and jumped into a nearby bush.

Checks with the police indicated that the body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for autopsy, while they await the family for identification.

Meanwhile, the police are calling on the public to assist them locate the deceased taxi driver’s family.

A statement from the public relations outfit of the Accra Regional Police Command has directed the car owner to contact the nearest police station.
