The equipment, which included an electric suction machine, multi-parameter monitor, pulse oximeters, and autoclavable drill, formed part of a collaboration between the government of Ghana and the Chinese government to improve healthcare delivery in the country.

As part of the collaboration, an 11-member medical team, with specialisation in various aspects of healthcare delivery, have also started a one-year service at the hospital.

Presentation

The leader of the Chinese medical team, Mr Zheng Jianghua, who presented the items to the hospital authorities, said it was the first time the Chinese medical team was collaborating with LEKMA Hospital in terms of equipment and human resource.

He said the collaboration was an opportunity to share innovative ideas with the local medical personnel to improve health care.

Mr Zeng underscored the need for such collaborations to be strengthened between the two countries.

Timely donation

The Medical Superintendent of LEKMA Hospital, Dr Juliana Oye Ameh, said the presentation of the equipment was timely and would go a long way to augment the efforts by the government to improve facilities at the hospital.

She mentioned inadequate medical staff as the key challenge confronting the hospital and said the presence of the Chinese medical team had filled some of the gaps.

Dr Yirenkyi called on the hospital to observe good health practices to ensure that the health of patients who visited the facility was not compromised.

Peer review exercise

In a related development, an assessment team from the Greater Accra Health Directorate visited the hospital to undertake a peer-review exercise.

The annual exercise, which began with Mamobi Polyclinic last week, is meant to assess the performance of the hospitals in the region and rank them accordingly.
