Clean cook stoves campaign launched at Awutu Bawjiase
The Ghana Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves (GHACCO) has launched a campaign for the use of clean cook stokes at Awutu Bawjiase in the Central Region.
GHACCO is a platform to promote the cook stoves sector to address the high levels of smokes and fumes resulting from cooking with solid fuels on traditional stoves.
The launch was organised as part of this year’s International Women’s Day celebration with the objective of creating awareness of the need for women to patronise clean cook stoves.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, who is also the Member of Parliament for the area, Madam Hannah Tetteh, presented a stove each to 50 women.
Chairperson
The outgoing Chairperson of GHACCO, Mrs Faustina Boakye, said women contracted a lot of diseases while cooking as a result of inhaling smoke from the fire.
According to her, GHACCO was committed to educating people on the dangers of using the old traditional stoves, adding that “GHACCO would ensure the use of the clean cook stoves to protect the forest vegetation from continuous depletion’’.
Minister
Madam Tetteh stated that the campaign was to ensure that women used improved cook stoves and other cooking items that might not affect their health negatively.
She added that the clean cook stoves would protect the lives of women who on daily basis came into contact with open fire as a source of livelihood.
DCE
The Awutu Senya District Chief Executive, Mr Sampson Abbey Armah, thanked GHACCO for the campaign as it would encourage a lot of women to use the clean cook stoves to save their lives.
The Paramount Queenmother of the Awutu Traditional Area, Naakye Dode Akaabi XIV, commended GHACCO and its partners for the initiative as it would help protect the lives of women.
She urged women to work hard in order to invest meaningfully in the education of their children to enable them to attain greater heights in future.
