DStv pricing report due September 29 - NCA

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that the stakeholder committee established to review DStv pricing in Ghana will present its findings by Monday, September 29, 2025, after receiving a one-week extension to complete its work.

In a statement issued in Accra on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Authority said the committee, which began work on September 8, 2025, had two main tasks.

The first was to develop a shared understanding of DStv pricing in Ghana and agree on commercially viable measures to address concerns raised by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation. The second was to prepare a roadmap to tackle cross-border piracy of DStv services from Nigeria into Ghana.

According to the NCA, the committee had made progress but requested additional time, which the Minister approved. “The outcome of the committee’s work is expected to be presented by September 29, 2025,” the statement read.

The pricing of DStv services has become a major point of contention in recent months. In April this year, MultiChoice Ghana increased subscription fees by an average of 15 per cent. The decision drew criticism from subscribers who argued that the cost of packages was becoming unaffordable despite the recovery of the cedi.

In August, the government directed MultiChoice to cut subscription fees by 30 per cent or risk suspension of its broadcasting licence. The company rejected the directive, arguing that such a reduction was “not sustainable” due to content costs, licensing fees, and operational expenses.

Subsequently, the Ministry imposed a statutory fine of GH¢10,000 per day on MultiChoice Ghana for failing to provide detailed pricing data required under the Electronic Communications Act.

Officials said the data, which must include a breakdown of bouquet prices, tax components, and comparisons with at least six African countries is essential to assess fairness and transparency in billing.
