The facility was donated by the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), an e-Ghana Project initiated by the government to generate growth and employment by leveraging on ICT.

GIFMIS is a four-year project (2010-2014) aimed at reforming public financial management in Ghana.

Already,136 officers of the GAS have been trained on how to maximise the use of the laboratory to facilitate their work.

A Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr Cassiel Ato Forson, who spoke at the hand over ceremony, said GIFMIS had been established as part of government’s efforts at improving fiscal discipline and macro-economic stability of the country.

According to him, the challenges confronting public financial management over the years had been the lack of integration of budget preparation and execution.

The Deputy Auditor General in charge of educational institutions and district assemblies, Mr Benjamin Cudjoe, said the introduction of computer programming at the GAS would enhance the work of the service.

The government is implementing the GIFMIS programme as part of the public financial management reform which aims at improving budget preparation and implementation, accounting and financial reporting as well as cash and assets management in all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), as well as the assemblies.
