Contractor in trouble over dud cheque

A building contractor is in the grip of the law after he was alleged to have issued a dud cheque to an auto mechanic.

Christopher Avevor pleaded not guilty to the charge of issuing false cheque when he appeared before an Accra Magistrate court, presided over by Ms Arit Nsemoh.

He was granted bail in the sum of GH¢18,000 with two sureties and GH¢800 as security deposit.

Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Chief inspector Gregory Yeboah said the complainant is Papaa Quartey, a Benz auto mechanic in Accra, while Avevor is a building contractor also in Accra.

He said in April 2015, Avevor bought a Toyota Sienna vehicle from Mr Quartey at GH¢20,000.

Avevor made part payment of GH¢13,000 and also issued a cheque with face value of GH¢7,000 to Quartey to be drawn on June 19, 2015.

On June 18, 2015, Avevor pleaded with Quartey not to present the cheque on the due date but rather on August 10, 2015. Quartey obliged to Avevor’s request.

According to the prosecutor, on August 10, 2015, Quartey presented the cheque at the bank but it was dishonoured.

C/Inspector Yeboah said after fruitless efforts to trace Avevor, Quartey reported the matter to the police who invited Avevor through calls but he failed to appear.

On December 12, 2015, Avevor was arrested and arraigned.
