In a goodwill message delivered to the team from the Flagstaff House, the President was optimistic that the team would glitter in their opening group game.

He said Black Stars have a huge reputation to protect judging by their incredible performance in their two previous appearances in the World Cup.

"You cannot afford to disappoint Ghanaians," the president told the team.

Ghana had previously defeated USA in the last two encounters in the 2006 and 2010 World Cup in Germany and South Africa respectively.

Although the President would not make any prediction in terms of score lines in the group games, he was confident Ghana would triumph in their matches.

Mr Mahama called for total support from Ghanaians everywhere bearing in mind the World Cup was an important national assignment.

The Black stars, he said, were flying the flag of Ghana in Brazil, and all Ghanaians must throw their weight behind them.

President Mahama stated that the World Cup was a matter of football and not anything about superpowers and developing countries

"Football is not about super powers or nuclear weapons, and that is why we as a small developing country will defeat all our opponents in Brazil beginning with the USA, " he said.

The president was also confident that all the other African countries at the World Cup would perform well.
