‘Don’t use religion to propagate hate, violence’

The Founder of the Etherean Mission, Brother Ishmael Tetteh, has urged Ghanaians not to use religion to propagate hate and violence but rather to promote peace and harmony.

He said religion had unfortunately become the breeding ground for the worst evil for humanity even though its main purpose was to bind and unite people.

“The recruitment of two Ghanaians by the Islamic State and the activities of other extremists who hide behind religion to commit atrocities show how religion has been hijacked by certain individuals to perpetuate their own selfish agenda,” he stated.

Brother Tetteh made the remark at the Mission’s annual Planetary Liberation Day in Accra.

The event which was on the theme, “Inter-Religious Harmony: A Roadmap to World Peace”, attracted members of the mission from all over the country, representatives of other religious groups and traditional leaders.

Tolerance and Peace

Brother Tetteh said the programme was meant to bring different religious bodies together in order to deliberate on ways to bring about sustainable peace in society.

He stated that most religions were founded on peace and tolerance and so religious bodies, irrespective of their differences, needed to come together and spearhead efforts to promote peace in every society.

“The greatest hindrance to peace is the lack of tolerance among some religious groups which claim to have exclusive right and access to God and therefore condemns all others. Peace can be achieved if we respect other people’s views and recognise the fact that God created us not to be the same but to be diverse in many ways.”

The Chief of Adumasa Akwamu, Nana Anasah Kwao IV, advised religious leaders to use their position to bring people together since religion was meant to fulfil people’s spiritual needs and not to create chaos.
