ECG installs 16 transformers in Accra West

The Accra West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has installed 16 new transformers in some areas within the region to improve power supply to those areas.

The transformers, which cost GH1,738,653.42, have been installed at parts of Dansoman, Weija, Darkuman Nyamekye, Joma-Bortianor, Fadama, Awudome, Kantamanto, CMB, Korle-Gonno, Chantan Scorpion Junction, Akweteyman Motorway, as well as the Nsawam Market, Asuotwene.

The transformers are four kilovolt-ampere (kVA), six 315 kVA, four 200 kVA and two 50 kVA.

 Problems solved

The transformers, which were installed between January and this month, are expected to increase capacity to meet growing demand, put an end to the rupturing of low voltage (LV) fuses, thereby improving the reliability of power supply in the communities.

They are expected to address the overload problem by taking on board more customers, as well as improve voltage in the areas.

Before the transformers were installed, the ECG had identified problems, including the frequent rupturing of LV fuses, low voltage and overload.

The Accra West Regional Engineer of the ECG, Mr Delali Oklu, told the Daily Graphic that since the installation of the transformers, there had been improvement in power delivery to the areas that experienced the problems that were identified.

The new transformers, he said, were mostly additions to existing ones in the areas to improve voltage.

 Demand

He said the ECG needed to keep pace with demand, which was growing, in spite of the present energy challenges, adding: “We have to be proactive, otherwise if the transformer is overloaded, it will burn, which will be a loss to the company.”

He asked customers to pay their bills regularly, since it cost the ECG a lot of money to undertake such projects to improve power supply in an area.

In addition, he said, the public should avoid illegal connections and further cautioned against the vandalisation of ECG sub-stations and the stealing of fuses.
