NADMO trains schoolchildren in disaster management

More than 300 students in the Ga Central Municipality have been trained on how to manage disaster in their homes and schools.

The students, selected from primary, junior and senior high schools (JHS/SHS), were educated on the meaning of disaster, its general causes and how to manage the risks associated with it.

They were also educated on climate change, rains, wind and how to deal with the threats these phenomena posed to human lives.

Participating schools included the Odorgonno SHS, Pank SHS, the Vicolis School Complex, the Justin Primary/JHS and the Abibiman School Complex.

The programme was put together by the Ga Central Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

 Celebration

The event formed part of this year’s International Day for Disaster Reduction, which is commemorated on October 13, every year.

It is a day set aside to celebrate the way people and communities reduce the rate at which they are exposed to disasters and raise awareness of the dangers of disasters and how they can be minimised.

The theme for the 2015 celebration encourages every citizen and the government to take part in building more disaster-resilient communities and nations.

Present at the event were the Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of NADMO, Mr Daniel Mensah, as well as the municipal coordinator.

 What students need to know

Addressing the participants, the Deputy National Coordinator of NADMO, Mr Ebenezer Dosoo, stated that there was the need for the students to become aware of the signs of disaster in whatever form they might appear.

“As students, it is important that you know everything about disasters and make good use of both traditional and modern ways of dealing with them,” he said.

He further called on the students to join the various volunteer disaster groups that had been formed in their schools.
