Election Steering Committee not suspended - EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed media reports that it has suspended the Election Steering Committee following an Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Friday.

There have been persistent calls for the EC to dissolve the Committee following which it set up to play what it says is a key role ahead of the November election.

Following the IPAC meeting Friday, there were media reports that the EC had decided to hold on with activities of the committee, repackage and present it for further discussion at IPAC.

But a statement released Saturday and signed by the Director of Public Relations at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry, rubbished the reports, saying “The Committee remains in place…”

Describing the report as an “erroneous” one that needed to be disregarded, the EC explained that at the IPAC meeting, it assured the stakeholders that it would reconsider the setting up of the committee and that it would meet and discuss the concerns raised and inform IPAC of its decision later.

“This should not be misconstrued as a suspension of the committee. The committee remains in place until a contrary decision is made,” the statement said.

The EC further appealed to the committee members to stay focused as it worked toward addressing the concerns raised.
