The convict, Jerry Quainoo (aka Joshua Kodwo), used a hammer to attack and rob his victim of her handbag containing GH¢960, three passports and credit cards on November 25, 2014.

He emerged from a nearby bush along the GIMPA-Legon road to attack the lady with the weapon when she was in traffic at about 9.45 p.m.

Quainoo, who is an ex-convict, was charged with robbery and he pleaded guilty with explanation.

Facts of case

Prosecuting, Inspector Martin Acheampong told the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, that the complainant is the chief commercial officer of African World Airline, while the convict is an electrician living at Satellite, near Pokuase.

He said series of complaints had been made by motorists plying the GIMPA-Legon road that armed robbers had been attacking and robbing them of their valuables.

As a result, the night patrol team was put on alert to track down the robbers.

At 9.45 p.m. on November 25, 2014, he said, the complainant was driving her Renault saloon car from Fiesta Royal Hotel towards Kisseman.

On reaching a section of the road between GIMPA and Legon T-junction, she got stuck in traffic. At that point, Quainoo emerged from a nearby bush and forcibly opened the complainant’s passenger side door.

The prosecutor stated that Quainoo threatened the complainant with a big hammer and eventually picked her handbag from the passenger seat. It contained GH¢960, three Ghanaian passports, cheque books, credit cards and personal documents.

After robbing his victim, Quainoo ran back into the bush. At about 9 p.m. on November 28, 2014, the police patrol team on duty at Kisseman got wind of the accused person’s presence within the same vicinity. The team was informed that he was armed with the hammer.

Inspector Acheampong said the police quickly proceeded to the area and arrested him.

On December 9, 2014, an identification parade was conducted by the Tesano Police and Quainoo was identified by the complainant, he added.

According to Inspector Acheampong, during a search in the convict’s house, the complainant identified British Airways and Virgin Nigeria passport covers as hers.
