Over the years, these hawkers and squatters have encroached on the railway lines and have even got closer to the Accra railway station without any effort by the authorities to assert their authority and enforce the regulations.

Structures erected along the lines are very close whereas the law stipulates that all buildings should be 100 feet away from the line.

The Ministry of Transport has issued a directive insisting on the removal of all illegal structures along railway lines across the country.

The move is to clear encroachers and hasten the development of railway stations along the route.

Recently, when the Minister of Transport, Ms Dzifa Attivor and her entourage inspected works on some railway lines in Accra, he asked all encroachers along the railway line to demolish their structures along the lines.

The acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Railways Development Authority, Mr Alidu Sadique, who conducted her round, her said  according to the railway regulations no structure should be erected 60 metres or 200 feet close to the rail lines.
