The seized items are to be moved to a plant in Accra to be dismantled.

The Director of Public Affairs of the Energy Commission, Mr Victor Owusu, told the Daily Graphic that the exercise was done in collaboration with the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.

He said that it was an enforcement of Legislative Instrument (LI) 1932 (2008), which bans the importation of used refrigerators and air-conditioners.

The LI came into effect in January, this year.

Mr Owusu said it was about time importers came to terms with the reality that the days of importing prohibited goods into the country with impunity were over.

He said the commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority were collaborating to ensure that nobody smuggled the banned goods into the country.

On the introduction of rebates for those using second-hand refrigerators to exchange them for new ones, he said more than 4,000 people had exchanged their used fridges for new energy efficient ones.
