EU to support Ghana’s development efforts

The European Union (EU) has pledged its commitment to support Ghana in the form of aid and other social services to ensure the country’s sustained growth and development.

Contrary to reports by sections of the media that the EU had cut short the provision of support and aid to the country due to its current economic mismanagement and budget deficit, the Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Ghana, Mr William Hanna, said the EU would provide more support for the country.

He said the EU was poised to assist Ghana to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to help reduce poverty.

He made this known when he called on the Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Ransford Tetteh, in Accra.

The visit was to interact with the editor to share some perspectives about global issues.

EU support over the years

From 2008 to 2013, the EU allocated nearly GH¢1 billion to support Ghana’s budget. The amount covered allocations made to the decentralisation process, infrastructure, sustainable development and trade in the budget.

Over the years, the EU has had larger co-operation with Ghana on a wide range of issues, such as politics, economics, trade and development.

“The EU will always support Ghana and other developing countries to ensure their growth and development,” Mr Hanna said.

Strengthening partnership

Even though Mr Hanna stated that the EU would continue to support Ghana, he indicated that there was the need to build close collaboration and partnership based on mutual benefits.

To show its commitment to help address social issues, the EU this year provided some support for civil society groups to tackle maternal health and service delivery in Ghana.

Mr Tetteh commended the EU for its support to Ghana and most African countries and urged the union to do more to help the continent.
