Finding herself in an area perceived as the preserve of men, she said media organisations, especially the electronic media, should consider offering more qualified women the opportunity to serve and also prove their worth, stressing that, the notion that females could not practise certain professions should be discarded.

Gratitude

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, she expressed her profound gratitude to her current employers, GBC, for giving her the chance to serve and advised female students to discard the notion that science was “a difficult subject”.

Ms Matey, who is a holder of Bachelor of Science (BSc) Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Regional Maritime University, also has a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Accra Polytechnic.

She also has a certificate in broadcast technology from the GBC Engineering Training School and a certificate in aeronautical radio operation from Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy (GATA).

She encouraged staff of the electronic media, including presenters, announcers, drivers and sound engineers, to continue to exhibit a high sense of competence, since the media, as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, had great responsibility under the 1992 Constitution to promote the development of the country’s democracy.

Struggles in life

Recounting her experience in her schooldays, she said she was once expelled from the examination hall and nearly prevented from writing a Chemistry paper for not paying her fees in full.

“My friends, led by Felicia Agbettor, mobilised money to pay my fees before I could write the examination. It was a pity,” she recalled.

She also acknowledged the contribution of her male siblings and other family members who encouraged her to venture into engineering and technology-related careers, but admitted that her achievement had not been easy.

“Getting to this stage has not been easy but with determination, hard work and commitment I am here. This is not the end though; I have plans for further studies since there is still a lot to learn,” she disclosed.

Early education

Ms Matey was born at Asesewa in the Upper Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region. In her formative years, she attended primary and junior high school (JHS) at the Methodist Primary and Local Authority JHS respectively at Asesewa and proceeded to the Manya Krobo Senior High School where she studied General Science.

Rosina is an ardent presbyterian.
