The station, which has been provided with a fire engine, will enable the service to deal with both domestic and bushfires in the district.

The people in the area previously had to rely on the fire station at Agona Swedru to respond to fire outbreaks.

At the official inauguration, the Chief Fire Officer, Dr Albert Brown Gaisie, said the policy of the service was to extend its operations to all parts of the country.

According to him, fire outbreaks had no boundary and it was important for the service to be closer to the people so as to deal with fires very effectively across the country.

Causes of fire

He explained that some people especially palm wine tappers and farmers preparing lands for the agricultural season negligently and deliberately caused fire outbreaks.

Mr Gaisie cautioned against the buying of inferior electrical cables to wire building, since such a move culminated in most domestic fires and their effects on families.

“I urge you all to engage the services of certified electricians to undertake electrical wiring of building to control the occurrence of fire outbreaks,” he stressed.

The Central Regional Fire Officer, DO1 Gilbert Wiafe, said as of February 2016, the region had recorded a total of 228 fire outbreaks with one death and 44 injuries, while properties worth GH¢40,000 had been destroyed.

He stated that the service was committed to reducing fire outbreaks in the region by 40 per cent to save lives and property.

The Member of Parliament for Agona East, Mrs Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, thanked the service for quickly responding to the people’s call for a new fire station for the district.

She further commended the district assembly for the necessary support towards the construction of the new station.

The Agona East District Chief Executive, Mr Francis Duodu Addo, assured personnel of the service of the assembly’s continuous support in the performance of their duties.

He said the establishment of the station was part of the government’s efforts towards deepening good governance.
