Miotso

The Tema Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ms Juliana Obeng, who confirmed the incident, said the truck with registration number GN 2413-13 and the Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number GE 4849-11 were both heading towards Tema.

She said at a spot near the Central University College at Miotso, the Metro Mass bus rammed into the tipper truck.

Ms Obeng said the police suspected that the accident might have occurred due to poor visibility, lack of attention and misjudgment on the part of the Metro Mass bus driver.

According to her, the Tema Regional Police MTTU will liaise with the Ghana Highway Authority to discuss the possibility of mounting a series of speed humps on that segment of the road to curb the rate of accidents there.

Divided Attention

Three of the passengers , Mr Kingley Atigah Fiamawle, Ms Vida Amesika and Madam Mary Gabala, who all sustained injuries in the accident, alleged that the driver of the bus, Mr Laud Osei had divided attention.

They told the Daily Graphic in separate interviews that Mr Osei who had no conductor aboard the vehicle, was also issuing tickets and collecting money at the same time.

Mr Osei, however denied the allegations that he was speeding while taking inventory of the cash and tickets at the same time.

He told the police and officials of the MMT who visited the hospital that while heading towards Miotso from Sangblemi where the government affordable houses had been built, he realised the Tipper truck loaded with sand had parked in his lane with no reflective signage, and before he could manage the situation, the operating system of the bus seized and he rammed into the truck resulting in the death of the four.
