About 100 women took part in a three-day intensive training in soap and bead making.

The training, which is held for three months every year by the Department of Community Development of the assembly, also aims at creating employment opportunities for the people in the area.

From January this year, about 400 women in the municipality have benefitted from the training programme.

Positive change

During the training programme in Accra, the Head of the  Department of Community Development of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly, Mrs Cynthia Agyapong, charged women to participate in such initiatives to ensure a positive change and development in their communities.

She said the initiative had benefitted some members of the community who were into the production of detergents on a large scale.

“This form of training seeks to empower women and enable them to raise their livelihoods. It combats inequality by bringing together women, girls and the physically challenged as beneficiary groups.

“This initiative also aims at better livelihoods for the vulnerable who are confronted with some difficulties in finding jobs,” she added.

Income-generating activities

Mrs Agyapong also noted that few women in the municipality were into income-generating activities, and indicated that there was the need for organisations to promote and implement such initiatives to provide additional work for women.
