Gemini Life holds health seminar for clientele
The Gemini Life Insurance Company (GLICO) has held a one-day health seminar for its clients and stakeholders in Accra.
This was part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of GLICO Healthcare, a subsidiary of the company.
The workshop was used to discuss a wide range of health problems that confront workers including oral health, respiratory diseases, diabetes and HIV and AIDS, by doctors and dentists from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Bethel Dental Clinic in Accra.
Participants were also taken through integrated healthcare system by Dr Francis Kwamin, a consultant from the University of Ghana Dental School (UGDS).
It was put together by GLICO in collaboration with Bethel Dental Clinic, on the theme: “The role of dental health care in the detection of systematic diseases.”
Dr Kwamin disabused the minds of the participants that it was only those who fell sick who were supposed to visit health centres regularly, noting that it was a wrong perception that a lot of Ghanaians had developed over the years.
“The fact that you do not experience any problem in your body doesn’t mean you should avoid visiting a medical practitioner,” he emphasised.
Observing oral health
Addressing participants in the seminar, Dr Wallace Ollennu of the Bethel Dental Clinic challenged them to observe a high level of oral health to stay healthy.
Failure to do so, he said, could result in tooth loss, pain, oral cancer, gum diseases, toothache, bad breath and in extreme cases, death.
“Oral disease could be a sign of major health problems so never sit down until you have challenges with any part of your body before you schedule an appointment with a doctor,” he said.
He further advised the beneficiaries to visit a dentist at least twice a year, and brush two times daily.
Oral health at corporate level
Dr Ollennu further called on corporate institutions to take into account the general well-being of their employees.
“Management should ensure that their staff do preventive check-ups annually for their total well-being,” he stressed.
He also advised them to floss their teeth at least once a day to remove food particles that might not be removed after brushing.
Briefing the Daily Graphic after the programme, the Head of Corporate Affairs and Marketing at the GLICO Group of Companies, Nana Efua Rockson, said the company was concerned about the health of its clients and stakeholders.
In view of that, she said health seminars and workshops would be held for its clients and stakeholders every quarter of the year.
Some of the participants were given special vouchers to visit the Bethel Dental Clinic for free medical check-ups and screening.
