Gender Ministry, PPAG to promote rights of vulnerable

A Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs Dela Sowah, has pledged the ministry’s commitment to deepen its partnership with the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) to promote the rights of Ghanaians.

She stated that one of the key mandates of the ministry was to protect the vulnerable in society and they see the partnership as essential to the achievement of the mandate.

Mrs Sowah made the remarks when the Chairman of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Mr Kweku Osae Brenu, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on her at her office in Accra on Friday. 

He was accompanied by the Executive Director of the PPAG, Dr Catherine Dawson-Amoah; Dr Cecilia Bentsi, a patron; Mr Benjamin Anang Sowah, the Advocacy and Resource Mobilisation Coordinator and Mrs Joyce Renee Djanie, an Executive Assistant.

Collaboration between the two 

According to Mrs Sowah, the ministry would continue to collaborate with the PPAG to address certain critical challenges in society such as gender based violence and gender inequality.

She commended the PPAG for their immense contribution towards the education of the public on reproductive health matters.

Assisting government 

In his address, the Regional Chairperson for the IPPF, Mr Kweku Osae Brenu, said a strong partnership between the PPAG and the ministry would facilitate their joint objective of protecting the rights of the vulnerable in society.

He said the activities of the PPAG in Ghana complemented the efforts of the government in improving the welfare of children and women in Ghana. 

Mr Brenu expressed his appreciation to the ministry for supporting the activities of the association and pledged the association’s commitment to improve access to reproductive and sexual health services in the country.

For her part, the Executive Director of PPAG, Dr Catherine Dawson-Amoah, said her  organisation was in partnership with some selected community based and volunteering organisations to achieve their objective of reducing HIV/AIDS and improving safe-motherhood services.
