German Embassy launches culinary diplomacy with Ghana-Germany fusion dinner

In a bid to strengthen ties between Ghana and Germany through the culinary arts, the German Embassy in Ghana has invited two chefs from Germany to participate in a gastronomic project titled “New Northern Dimension in Culinary Experiences.”

The chefs—Otto Pfeiffer, a German from Berlin, and Esther Mumuni, a Ghanaian born in Tamale but currently residing in a town near Hamburg—are set to prepare a fusion of northern German and northern Ghanaian dishes for a dinner to be hosted at the residence of the German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, today, Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Introducing the two chefs at a press briefing at his residence yesterday, Mr Krull said he recognised how deeply food resonates with Ghanaians. He explained that this appreciation inspired him to explore how culinary collaboration could serve as a platform to deepen relations between the two countries.

“It has never been done before—at least not from the German side—and I strongly believe that's a very, very exciting learning experience for the chefs and for us who will have the privilege to dine with them. Hopefully, it will trigger more innovative thinking in cooking in Germany and Ghana,” he said.

Since arriving in Ghana, the chefs have toured Tamale to expose Mr Pfeiffer to the rich culinary heritage of northern Ghana, including traditional kitchens and local markets.

Mr Pfeiffer remarked that the experience had sparked innovative culinary ideas, which he was eager to explore at tonight’s dinner.

“Our idea is to help build bridges between Germany and Ghana in a totally new dimension,” he said.

Ms Mumuni shared insights into the dishes they had developed, describing them as delightful blends of Ghanaian and German ingredients and culinary traditions.
