Sonnie Badu backs Kwesi Appiah for Black Stars job after Otto Addo sack
Gospel musician Sonnie Badu has called for the appointment of Kwesi Appiah as head coach of the Ghana national football team, following the team’s recent defeat to the Germany national football team.
In a Facebook post after Monday’s international friendly, the award-winning singer expressed concerns about the capacity of outgoing coach Otto Addo to handle the senior national team, despite acknowledging some positives from the match.
“After last night’s match, I gained some hope in Otto, but I think the senior national team was too big a responsibility for him,” Sonnie Badu wrote. “Maybe he’d be a better fit for one of the junior national teams.”
The musician, however, was emphatic in his endorsement of Kwesi Appiah, citing his familiarity with the players and experience as key advantages, especially with limited time ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Let’s get Akwesi Appiah, even if it’s just for the World Cup,” he stated, adding that appointing a foreign coach at this stage could be risky due to the time needed to adapt.
Sonnie Badu’s comments come at a time when the Black Stars are grappling with inconsistency, both in performance and rankings. Ghana has dropped to 74th in the latest FIFA rankings released on April 1, 2026, slipping two places from its previous position. Although the team remains 14th in Africa and secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after topping their group in late 2025, recent results have raised concerns.
Ghana also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and had previously fallen as low as 77th in the global rankings before a brief recovery.
The latest dip follows a difficult international window, including the loss to Germany, which exposed gaps in organisation and match sharpness.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association parted ways with Otto Addo on March 31, a day after the defeat, leaving the coaching position vacant.
On the African stage, Ghana continues to trail leading sides such as the Morocco national football team, Senegal national football team and Nigeria national football team, all of whom rank higher globally.
Globally, the France national football team has climbed to the top spot, replacing the Spain national football team.
With the World Cup approaching, attention is now turning to who will take over the reins of the Black Stars, as preparations intensify in the search for stability and improved performance.
