Fire Service contain fire at Timber Market; two fighters injured

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a major fire that broke out at the Accra Timber Market near Ayalolo School in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, 2025.

According to a statement shared on the GNFS, the emergency call was received at 1:17am, with the first team of firefighters arriving at the scene just four minutes later, at 1:21am.

The statement said a total of seven fire engines from key stations across the capital; including Accra City, Accra Regional Headquarters Substation, Ministries, Circle, National Headquarters, Abelemkpe, and Legon were mobilised.

These units were supported by one GNFS water tanker and two additional tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Ablekuma Municipal Assembly.

The intense blaze, which engulfed several shops dealing in wooden planks and hardware materials, was brought under control through coordinated efforts.

The statement said two firefighters sustained injuries while responding to the incident — one suffered an electric shock, and the other sustained burns to the left arm. Both were treated and have since been discharged, responding well to treatment.

"While several shops dealing in wooden planks and hardware materials were destroyed, adjoining buildings, including the Ayalolo cluster of Schools, were salvaged due to the swift intervention of firefighters."

"The Acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, was at the scene to assess the situation and provide operational support. She was joined by the Deputy Director of Operations, ACFO II Osmond Anum, the Greater Accra Regional Commander, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, and other senior officers who ensured effective firefighting coordination," it read.

The GNFS expressed appreciation to all supporting agencies for their assistance. Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
