10 KTI students picked up by police over campus 'demo'

Ten students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) have been picked up by the police for their alleged involvement in an on-campus protest that led to the destruction of school property.

The students on Sunday evening went on the rampage and cause damage to school properties including vehicles.

The riot is said to have followed an attempt by the authorities of the school to prevent them from wearing non-prescribed school uniforms.

The students who were mainly final year students were said to have worn shirts which were not approved to prep (evening studies) and when the Senior House Master insisted that they change their shirts, it degenerated into a confrontation which led to the attack by the students.

The Manhyia Divisional Commander of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Kwaku Buah, who confirmed the arrest of the 10 to students to Graphic Online explained that the suspects were assisting the police in their investigation.

He said the rampaging students caused damages running into hundreds of Ghana cedis and described it as very unfortunate for students to be engaging in such activities.

He described the extent of damage as quite extensive “from the dormitory through the departments to the housemasters’ bungalows even to the farms.

“They destroyed lots of things. People’s cars have been vandalized, air conditioners, louvre blades, doors… lots of things have been damaged by the students,” the police commander said.

In 2017, the students were involved in a similar incident following a confrontation with the police.

In that incident, the students who were returning from Ashanti Regional Inter schools sports games blocked the road leading to the school and created traffic congestion.

In an attempt to free the road for traffic flow, the police were called in to restore order and it degenerated into a confrontation which spread onto the campus.
