3 Foreigners nabbed over sim card fraud

Three foreign nationals have been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command in connection with suspected SIM box fraud activities at the Sakumono Ramsar Site in Accra.

The arrests took place last Wednesday, January 21, following intelligence-led operations targeting residential apartments in the area.

The suspects have been identified as Timileyin Fakunle, 30; Begun Adedeji, 31; and Olamide Roheemot, 28, all of whom were apprehended in separate apartments.

During searches of the premises, police recovered sophisticated electronic gadgets, SIM boxes and numerous SIM cards, which are believed to have been used in the alleged fraudulent activities.

During interrogation, the suspects revealed the involvement of two other accomplices, known only as Mike and Kpalumi, who are currently on the run.

The police said the alleged leader of the group, Tomy, a Chinese national, who reportedly remotely controls the SIM boxes, is also on the run.

The suspects are currently in custody as inquiries continue.

Police said the exercise forms part of the collaborative efforts with the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Cybersecurity Authority to combat cybercrime.

It said the collaboration with the NCA helped to safely remove and technically examine the recovered equipment, which will support further investigations.

The Command reiterated its commitment to combating cybercrime and telecommunication-related offences across the region, emphasising the importance of community cooperation in tackling such criminal activities.

Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Command, in a statement, has cautioned members of the public against renting or subletting properties to unknown individuals without proper verification.

It urged property owners and residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the Police.
