Youth interest in large-scale farming grows in Volta Region - Minister projects bright development prospects
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has said there are very bright short- to medium-term development prospects for the region, with the steadily growing interest of young people in large scale farming.
He said the trend was very encouraging and gave an assurance that the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) would continue to commit great zeal and resources towards attracting and supporting massive investments into the sector.
Mr Gunu said this when members of the Awazorli Central Committee, led by the Paramount Chief of Botoku, Togbega Sei II, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Ho last Thursday.
The seven-member committee is made up of the communities of Ziavi, Botoku, Etordome, Kpando-Anyigbe, Kpedze-Todze, Mefe, and the Ando groups in Ghana and Togo.
Mr Gunu said agriculture was definitely the key to progress and job creation, adding that the processing of farm produce would lift the region to astonishing development heights.
He said 300 young people in the region were now poised for large-scale agriculture, involving cultivation of crops and raising livestock on vast land, using significant machinery.
Mr Gunu said the government was assisting them with them land, fertilisers and various inputs, in a bold move to transform the fortunes of the region.
Appeal
He, therefore, renewed his appeal to traditional leaders and landowners in the various communities to make land available for such ventures which would benefit generations yet unborn.
The Volta Regional Minister urged the Awazorli communities to make conscious and sustained efforts to rid all land and chieftaincy dispute in their domain, as an unavoidable condition for smooth development.
Earlier, Togbe Sei, commended the Regional Minister for his dedication to duty, transparency and all-inclusive policy to work.
“With you at the helm of affairs, this region will continue to make rapid progress,” he added.
Togbega Sei said the Awazorli was one of the biggest unions of traditional areas in the region and a development force to reckon with.
He pledged the union’s firm stance to work hand-in-hand with the government in all development ventures and preserve the peace and enabling atmosphere for nation building.
Togbe Sei said the union was also a hub for rich and diverse cultures and announced Awazorli would turn 40 years next year.
He said the celebration would be a mega-festival and an overwhelming cultural exposition.
Other members of the delegation included the Paramount Queen of Etordome, Magaga Tooto II; Togbega Sei’s personal assistant, Gloria Agbesi; the union’s organiser, John Asempa; its financial secretary, Togbe Dunenyo I; and secretary, Richmond Dabi.
