62 Cleared for GJA elections
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has cleared 62 aspirants to contest for various national and regional positions in the upcoming elections scheduled for June 30, this year.
Among those cleared are 13 candidates for national positions and 49 for regional roles, following a thorough vetting process, including a review of petitions against some aspirants by the elections committee.
Consequently, the Elections Committee of the association has set tomorrow for balloting at the Ghana International Press Centre, which serves as its national secretariat.
National
In the national positions, incumbent President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, is being contested by communications specialist, media consultant and trainer, Charles Yao Mawusi.
Meanwhile, the current Public Affairs Officer (PAO), Rebecca Ekpe, an editor at the Ghana Braodcasting Corporation faces Mary Tawiah Mensah, the Foreign Editor of the Daily Graphic and a former PAO of the GJA.
Dominic Hlordzi, the current Oraganising Secretary of the association, is seeking re-election as General Secretary to replace Kofi Yeboah, who is stepping down. But Mr Hlordzi, also with the GBC, must edge out two-time contestant for the same position, Akwasi Agyeman, who previously lost the position to Hlordzi.
Maxwell Kudekor, the outgoing Eastern Regional Chairman, has entered the race for the position of Organising Secretary, competing against Suleiman Mustapha, the Acting Editor of Graphic Business.
In the Treasurer contest, Bertha Badu-Agyei from the Ghana News Agency is running against Theodora Amedetor from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
Ceasar Abagali, who lost the Public Affairs Officer position in the previous election, is also vying for a win this year against Zadok Kwame Gyesi, a former journalist with Graphic Online, who is now a freelance journalist and researcher.
Region
In the Ashanti Region, Kofi Adu Domfeh and Georgina Ama Ankomah are contesting for the Chairperson position, while Kingsley Nana Buadu of GBC and David Yarboi-Tetteh of the Ghanaian Times are competing for the same role in the Central Region.
In the Eastern Region, Yvonne Neequaye of Media General and Neil Nii Armatey Kanarku of Citi FM/Channel One are facing off for the Chairperson slot, with Isaac Akwetey Okunor and Gloria Afful contesting for the Secretary position.
In the North-East Region, Abdul-Majeed Yakubu, the Northern Regional Chairman, will compete against Daily Graphic’s Mohammed Fugu for the role.
In the Upper East Region, Albert Sore and Ebo-Bruce Quansah will battle for the Chairperson role.
The Chairperson position is also being fiercely contested in the Upper West and Volta Regions, where Emmanuel Agbaxode and Kofi Belley Harrison are vying in Volta, while Prosper Kuorsoh and Seidu Ibrahim Bomanjo are competing in theUpper West.
Additionally, Ewoenam Kpodo and King Freeman Nutsukpoe are contesting for Treasurer in the Volta Region.
