The union said in more than many ways, Dr Oppong continue to inspire and encouragement members to look beyond their pursuit of academic excellence to do more to preserve their cultural heritage.

A citation presented to him on behalf read; “To the visionary Dr Oppong, a shining star in the firmament of Asante heritage, we pay tribute to your magnanimous gift of the Ohene and ohemaa stools to our beloved Asante Students Union.

Your generosity is a testament to your unwavering dedication to the preservation of our culture identity and the empowerment of future leaders. We celebrate your remarkable contribution, which will forever be etched in the annals of our union’s history”.

Dr Oppong received the honour during an occasion in Accra to inaugurate new executives of the union.

During the occasion, Dr Oppong presented two stools to the union to help establish an authority within the association and also preserve the sanctity of the Asante culture and identity.

Advise

Dr Oppong, after receiving his citation, encouraged the students in the union to study hard to enable them to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for the development of Asanteman in particular and Ghanaians in general.

He reminded them that they were responsible for their future and that the government, parents and stakeholders had provided educational facilities and it behoved them to work hard to achieve excellence in their academics.

He stressed that the surest way to develop the workforce of any country and improve the well-being of the society was education and, therefore, they must make efforts to excel in their various disciplines of study.

“Asanteman is a nation on its own and we don’t want you students to be left behind. Everybody is learning and things are changing now. These days, it will even be difficult for you to be enstooled as a chief if you are not educated.

“So education is very important in every facet of life and we want you students who are the future leaders to take your studies seriously so that you can take up the mantle from us when we grow old,” Dr Oppong stated.

Commendation

The newly installed chief of the union, Ebenezer Osei, commended Dr Oppong for his unwavering support of the union.

He said since the establishment of the union, there had not been any stool to represent the symbol of authority in the union.

He, therefore, thanked him for recognising the need for a stool and making an effort to present some to the union.

“The stool is going to cement my authority and encourage me to work hard to help this union achieve its objectives.

“I also want to encourage my members to support by participating in all the ASU activities to help make this union very vibrant,” he said.
