Ashanti Region GJA commends Asantehene for release of land for office project

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for releasing a piece of land towards the construction of a permanent office complex for the association in the region.

Initially, the government provided a piece of land to the association for the construction of its press centre, but unfortunately, the GJA in the region lost the land.

However, through the Asantehene’s intervention, another land has been allocated to the association for its much-awaited project.

The Regional Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh, said the association was eternally grateful to the Asantehene for his good and thoughtful gesture to the association in the discharge of its professional duties in the region.

Awukudae celebration

He made the remarks when he led the leadership of the association and other veteran media professionals to join the Asantehene in the celebration of the third Awukudae of the year at the Manhyia Palace last Wednesday.

Awukudae, an important festival on the Asante traditional calendar, is celebrated on Wednesdays nine times in a year in 42-day intervals.

The visit also afforded the association the opportunity to introduce its new leadership to the Asantehene and also to thank him for graciously hosting the 29th GJA awards ceremony for the first time outside Accra at the Jubilee Hall of the Manhyia Palace.

“We wish to thank Otumfuo for ensuring that a land is allocated to us to pave the way for the construction of a befitting press centre where the leadership and members can have as their own and operate from,” he stressed.

Corporate support

He indicated that the ambitious project was capital-intensive and, therefore, appealed to individuals and corporate institutions to come to their aid towards the execution and realisation of the project.

Particularly, he lauded Fidelity Bank for providing an amount of GH¢50,000 towards the construction of the project, saying: “We are hoping that individuals and entities who have the interest of journalists at heart will also come on board with their widow’s mite”.

While indicating that every community and nation deserves the best of journalism practice, he said, “This can be made possible only if journalists have a conducive environment to operate from”.

“The availability of the press centre will enable members to have a place to meet to build their capacity on trends in journalism, especially in today’s era of misinformation and disinformation,” Mr Domfeh stated.

Other dignitaries

Similarly, Nananom, government officials, dignitaries and royals joined in the occasion to pay homage to the King of the Ashanti Kingdom and seek his blessings as well.

Among the government officials who graced the occasion were the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie; the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene; the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, and some Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs), among others.
