The Atiwa District Directorate of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has elected new officers to run the affairs of the association for the next four years at a delegates conference held at Kwabeng, the Atiwa West District capital.

The election coincided with GNAT’s seventh quadrennial 54th district delegates conference on the theme: ‘’Ghana Education Service @ 50: Achievements, Teacher Motivation, Challenges and the way forward’’.

New officers

Isaac Horvey emerged as the new Atiwa GNAT District Chairman, with Daniel Agbogbo as his vice. The treasurer position went to Mavis Ofosua Koranteng while the trustee is Benjamin Akesseh.

The others are Millicent Penni, the education office representative, Emelia Maku Kenney, GNAT-Ladies Association (GNAT-LAS) representative, and Patience Afua Ofori, District Youth Coordinator, Maxwell Dwomoh Gyan, the basic school representative and Bright Kodzo Attuah for the position of senior high school representative.

The new officers were sworn in by the Eastern Regional GNAT Chairman, Patrick Boison, after taking the oaths of office and secrecy.

Dedication

The Regional Chairman urged the newly elected officers to ensure they coexisted and served their members in the district well because of the confidence they had reposed in them by electing most of them unopposed, adding ‘’exhibit your good work done for the last four years once again’’.

The Atiwa District GNAT Secretary, Mercy Adjoa Bonnie, lauded the GNAT members in the district for their dedication and commitment to the union for the past 10 years since the district was carved out of East Akyem.

The Atiwa West District Chief Executive (DCE), Amo Johnson Anom, a professional teacher and the past Atiwa District GNAT Chairman, praised teachers in the district and Ghana as a whole for their dedicated service to help promote quality teaching and learning.

He said even though income levels for teachers were low, that should not negate the fact that it was taxpayers’ money that was used to train them in the colleges of education and the universities, hence they must keep on putting up their best, adding, ‘’I have a teacher initiative package in the pipeline for you’’.

The Chief of Akyem Muoso in the Atiwa West District, Osabrima Dr Owusu Beyeeman, entreated all stakeholders, including parents and chiefs, to contribute resources towards quality education delivery in the area since education held the future of the children.

The chief, as part of his contribution towards education, has pledged to donate a parcel of land for the Atiwa GNAT Secretariat at Muoso, in addition to a seed money for the project.

The District Directors for Atiwa East and West, Pearl Leonel Acquah and John Kwasi Osafo, respectively, took time to address the delegates on their professional duties as teachers.
