Calvary Methodist Church marks centenary with dinner and awards

The Calvary Methodist Church, Adabraka has held a dinner and awards ceremony to honour past and present members who have contributed to the growth of the society since its establishment a century ago.

The event which took place at the Ridge Church Hall on Saturday, September 27, and formed part of its year-long centenary celebration, seeks to encourage the younger generation to continue building on its legacy.

It also brought together clergy, laity and friends of the church, including the vice president of the country, Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang to celebrate God’s faithfulness and the church’s impact in nurturing the Methodist tradition in Accra and beyond.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice President commended the church of its good works in the society.

She said it was important the church honoured individuals who contributed to the growth of the church.

Journey, impact

Chairman of the centenary planning committee, Evangelist Kingsford Amoah, recalled the beginning of Calvary Methodist saying “from a small seed that began as a nursery school, Calvary has grown into one of the most important societies in the Methodist Church Ghana”

He said over the past 100 years, it has contributed to the growth of the Methodist church by planting branches, including Mount Olivet at Dansoman, St. John’s near Achimota, Gethsemane at Mamprobi among others, and branches outside Accra, such as in the Oti Region and engaged in evangelism across the country.

Evangelist Amoah explained that, beyond evangelism, the church has supported education and health projects through the wider Methodist Church Ghana, which runs some of the country’s leading secondary schools and hospitals.

He said the society remained committed to nation-building through its outreach, mission and renewal efforts.

Dinner and awards

He said as part of the centenary activities, the church had organised musical concerts, children and youth programmes, lectures, and a thanksgiving service, aimed at strengthening fellowship and deepening faith.

The dinner and awards night, he said, was therefore not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity to inspire members to serve with renewed zeal as the church journeys into its next century.

Explaining the awards process, Evangelist Amoah said an independent sub-committee was tasked to select awardees from various organisations within the church.

Each group nominated members who had distinguished themselves in service, while six individuals received special awards for their dedication over the years.
