Chief Imam congratulates Mahama, decries post-election violence
The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has congratulated the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on his victory in the just-ended presidential election.
He described the victory of the former President as a reflection of his resilience and perseverance in pursuit of service to the country and humanity.
Sheikh Sharubutu also commended the Vice-President and presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for accepting the presidential result in good faith.
He said the concession by the Vice-President in the early hours of last Sunday demonstrated his sense of patriotism over individualism.
“It is also a showcase of humility, maturity and civility. This is, indeed, a dignifying act worthy of emulation in the interest of democratic consolidation,” the statement added.
This was contained in a statement dated December 10, 2024, and signed by the Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, Dr Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo.
Good governance
Sheikh Sharubutu expressed the hope that the confidence reposed in the President-elect would enhance the quality of constitutional rule and good governance in the country.
The Chief Imam further hailed the electorate for their contribution to the largely peaceful conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections.
By Election 2024, the Chief Imam said, Ghana had earned another enviable position in the comity of civilised democratic nations.
Concerns
Sheikh Sharubutu, however, expressed concern about the isolated incidents of violence and the resultant fatalities in some cases.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and called for an end to post-election violence, which had been characterised by vandalism and hooliganism in the country.
The Chief Imam said burning and looting, beating and killing had never been solutions to electoral disputes or means of victory celebrations in civilised societies governed by constitutional order.
He further prayed for a peaceful transition, democratic consolidation and good governance, as the nation strives to build “Ghana our Motherland in a state of unity in diversity”.
