Christians mark Palm Sunday

Christians in the country yesterday  marked Palm Sunday, a day that commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, on the eve of His crucifixion.

Christians all over the world started the Holy Week in anticipation of Easter with a Palm Sunday celebration.

The Holy Week is celebrated as preparation towards the resurrection known as Easter.

The celebration was marked in Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region, with a procession of parishioners reports Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor.

At Kanton in Wa, the parishioners of St Benedict Catholic Church, led by the Assistant Parish Priest, Rev. Fr Gaspard Cirimwami, had a short procession within the community before going to church for Mass.

In his homily, Rev. Fr Cirimwami entreated the parishioners and Christians in general to prepare their hearts to welcome the risen Christ.

He said the Holy Week was an opportunity offered to Christians to repent and reconnect with their Maker.

Alberto Mario Noretti reports from Ho that the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, entreated the people to renew their spirit of patriotism and to unite as Ghanaians with a common purpose to support the government to move the nation forward during the Easter celebration.

“Christ sacrificed his life for mankind, and so, we can also make sacrifices for our nation by working hard and consolidating peace,” he said in an Easter message on Sunday, April 13.

Mr Gunu said Easter was not a period for binge drinking and gluttony, but a time of cleansing oneself of evil acts and motives and helping the less privileged in society.

“This is the time for us to reunite as children of the same father and one nation to move forward,” the Regional Minister added.

Mr Gunu pointed out that Jesus dined with Gentiles  and not only the Jews; and that signified love for all mankind, “which we must all emulate.”

He urged the youth to avoid drunkenness and lawless conduct during the celebration, saying those manners did not serve the purpose of Easter.

In a related development, the NDC Member of Parliament for Ho Central, Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, called on the constituents to forgive those who wronged them and live in harmony as one people.

He said one’s allegiance to the country was more important than individual and parochial considerations, which may not serve the national interest.

“So, let us not divide ourselves with unnecessary and worthless attitudes,” the MP said.

Mr Kpotosu implored the people to demonstrate their love for one another during Easter by sharing the little that they had with others.

“Let brotherly love prevail during the Easter period,” he added.
