Commemoration of International Firefighters Day: Fire safety is collective responsibility — Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has called for the active participation of the public in fire prevention, saying that ensuring fire safety is the collective responsibility of every citizen.

“It is, therefore, unfair to blame excesses of fire safety failures and gaps only on the GNFS.

“As a matter of truth, majority of all fire outbreaks are caused by human actions and inactions, and the only way to change the status quo is to commit to acceptable standards of safety by adhering to the messages of the service,” Mr Debrah said.

He urged the public to adopt responsible behaviours, both at home and in workplaces, as simple preventive measures could reduce fire incidents.

“The change we are looking for starts from us, from our houses to our workplaces. Let us practice fire safety and encourage others to do same,” Mr Debrah added.

The Chief of Staff made the call at the commemoration of International Firefighters Day in Accra yesterday, on the theme: “An attack on firefighters and equipment is an attack on public safety; End assaults and protect the firefighter.”

Equipment support

On resourcing the Fire Service, the Chief of Staff said: “I wish to assure you that the process of procuring new equipment for the service is far advanced, and in due course, we will be taking delivery of new appliances and logistics”.

“I encourage you, our noble officers to keep up your good work. Serve with dignity, sincerity and dedication, and remember that your job is that of a divine calling and your absence always leave a gap that may not be filled,” he said.

Protect firefighters

The Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Daniella Ntow Sarpong, said firefighting was a time-sensitive operation where every second counted, as such, any obstruction, whether from traffic, access challenges or human interference, could lead to loss of lives and property.

“There have been unfortunate incidents where firefighters responding to emergencies have been obstructed or even attacked, with some equipment damaged in the process. This must not continue,” she said.

The CFO explained that when firefighters were delayed or prevented from carrying out their duties, it was not only the service that suffered but it also put citizens in distress.

“When a firefighter cannot reach the scene on time, it is lives and livelihoods that are put at risk. Firefighters do not respond for recognition; they respond with a clear objective of protecting life and property,” she said.

The CFO, therefore, advised the public to respect emergency sirens, give way to fire tenders and also cooperate fully with emergency responders.

“As we mark this important day, let us renew our shared commitment to building a safer Ghana — one where emergency response can work without obstruction and where communities and institutions work hand in hand,” she said.

The CFO expressed gratitude to officers across the country for their dedication and sacrifices, adding “you have shown courage and commitment, often running towards danger when others are running away. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed,” the CFO added.
