Dead robber was not mistaken identity -Police

The Accra Regional Police Command has cleared the air on the shooting of a suspected robber on the Spintex Road after he and his accomplice allegedly attacked a woman who was returning from a party on January 4, 2019.

The police explained that the suspected robber, who was the pillion rider, was shot by the police in their attempt to demobilise them as they attempted to escape arrest.

Briefing journalists, Mrs Efia Tengey, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, said shooting of the victim was not a case of mistaken identity as alleged by the family.

The deceased, she said, died through a gunshot wound he sustained from the police after robbing his victim.

She said the suspected robbers attacked the woman and took her ladies’ hand bag and iPhone from her.

The woman, Mrs Tengey said, sought help from the nearest police snap check point which was close to the Greda Estates on the Spintex Road.

The police at the check point, she said, handed her over to a patrol team to assist her.

According to Mrs Tengey, the police patrol team began a search for the suspects and found the men on a robbery spree in the area.

Uncompleted building

She said in an attempt to demobilise them, the pillion rider fell and the rider escaped.

Following a call someone in the neighbourhood placed to the Police Information Room, Mrs Tengey said, the suspect who fell was arrested in an uncompleted building with injuries.

A search on him by the police revealed the woman's phone concealed in his pocket.

Other items found on him included six mobile phones which the police suspected were robbed from other victims under similar circumstances.

The police also found a packet of condom, a kitchen knife, a dagger and a machete.

Mrs Tengey said investigations were underway to establish ownership of the phones.
