GLICO General Insurance has presented GH¢2 million to support families of the eight people who died in the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region in the line of duty.
The gesture included GH¢1.8 million payouts to the bereaved families, GH₵100,000 to the Children’s Support Fund, and another GH¢100,000 to the Ghana Armed Forces.
The presentation was attended by the wives, children, dependents and other relatives of the deceased.
It also brought together representatives from the Office of the President, the Ministry of Defence, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, the National Insurance Commission, corporate executives, and others.
Mandatory
The Managing Director (MD) of GLICO General Insurance, Andrew Achampong-Kyei, who made the presentation, called on ministries, departments and agencies to make insurance coverage mandatory to better protect individuals, families and national assets.
“We call on government ministries, departments and agencies to make insurance not a luxury, but a necessity,” he said.
He urged Parliament to strengthen the enforcement of existing laws to ensure that compliance with insurance was not optional.
“We call on insurers; continue to innovate, partner to make protection affordable and accessible,” he added.
He called for a national rethink on the importance of insurance, stressing that tragedies such as this highlight the urgent need for collective preparedness.
“We cannot continue to treat insurance as optional. The risks our nation faces on the roads, in aviation, in public service are too vast to be borne by one company or one ministry alone. Insurance must be seen not as an expense, but as an investment in peace of mind, family security, and national stability.”
Commitment
Mr Achampong-Kyei reaffirmed the company’s commitment, saying,” For more than 40 years, GLICO has made protection and preparedness the cornerstone of its operations, with corporate social responsibility deeply embedded in its mission.
He highlighted the company’s support to communities through educational initiatives, health and life insurance, and risk management across industries, including marine, aviation, and public events.
He said the two ministers among the gallant eight had been given a personal accident cover with GLICO General Insurance.
“For the families of those who were not covered under the policy, GLICO pledged direct financial support to ensure no one is left behind. No one should stand alone.
We pray this brings even a modicum of comfort for your loss, which is our collective loss”, the MD of GLICO added.
The Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Edward F. Kyei, extended the group’s heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and said the gesture was both a tribute to their sacrifice and a reaffirmation of the company’s founding vision of providing security and hope to Ghanaians during their most difficult times.
“We stand here with you, united in spirit and heart, trusting that God Himself will ease the burden of your loss.
While God works to comfort you spiritually, we are here to help ease some of the financial challenges and burdens that often come with such tragedies,” he added.
He urged the country to cherish the memories of the gallant eight as lasting reminders of loyalty, humility, and love for Ghana.
