Govt will not abandon €31m Wenchi Water project - Asiedu Nketia to Wenchi chiefs

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed the government's commitment to complete the €31 million Wenchi water project to resolve the long-standing Wenchi water crisis.

He explained that the project was started by the previous government in 2020, giving assurance that the current administration would not abandon the project, but would complete it to ensure access to clean and safe water for communities.

Mr Nketia was addressing a mini durbar of chiefs and people of Nkonsia near Wenchi in the Bono Region last Friday, as part of his two-day "Thank You" tour of the region.

A similar mini durbar of chiefs and people was held in 11 constituencies to show appreciation to the people for voting for the NDC in the 2024 elections.

Water crisis

“Residents should have no fear that the NDC government will abandon the Wenchi water project, as we are committed to completing it to address the water crisis in the Wenchi area,” he said.

Located near the Tain River, the project is expected to produce 10,700 cubic meters per day and serve about 10 water crisis communities in Wenchi Municipality and some parts of the Tain District.

Mr Nketia gave a firm assurance to the people that the government would see to it that the long-awaited project was delivered.

He said Wenchi, once a vibrant town, had suffered neglect under the previous government for eight years, which resulted in limited development.

The National Chairman called on residents to unite and support the government’s efforts to redevelop the town.

Mr Nketia said the government was fully prepared and ready to develop the country, adding that the party had not taken the overwhelming support of Ghanaians in the 2024 election for granted.

Road

On roads, he said the government would prioritise the construction of roads linking to Wenchi.

Mr Nketia mentioned Wenchi-Wa Highway, Wenchi-Sampa road and Nsawkaw-Berekum road as some of the major roads to be constructed.

He said the government would invest in the infrastructure development of Al-Faruq College of Education (AFCoE) at Wenchi, the only public College of Education offering an approved curriculum in Arabic Education in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa to expand its capacity and improve academic activities.

At Namasa in the Tain District, Mr Nketia said the government would establish an Islamic Senior High School at Mamase to train Islamic scholars.

Appeal

The Akyeamehene of the Wenchi Traditional Area, Nana Damoah Koasane Adusi Poku Kafabaae IV, appealed to the government to prioritise the development of the Municipality.

He urged the government to create employment opportunities for the youth in the area, explaining that the area had produced many graduates, but most of them were unemployed.

At Namasa in the Tain District, the Namasahene, Sulamaina Zingor, also appealed to the government to establish a Cashew Development Board (CDB), construct teachers' and nurses' bungalows, and expand electricity to underserved communities.

He thanked the government for awarding contracts for some critical roads to enhance movement and accessibility.

At Miramano in the Jaman South District, the Chief of Miramano, Nana Nketiah Bosopremre Kankamadu III, commended the government for the installation of network service in the area.

He, however, called on the government to construct the roads in the area to facilitate the transportation of farm produce.

Nana Kankamadu also urged the government to deploy more police personnel in the area, construct a Community-Based Health Planning Services (CHPS) compound for the community and procure a fire tender for the district.
