Holuta — exciting, pretty, clean border community

Holuta is by all a means a beautiful community.

The experience of crossing the high steel bridge from the Kpedze direction while entering Holuta is indeed fascinating. The serenity on arrival is refreshing.

A first time visitor to the border community in the Ho West District in the Volta Region is held captive by the clean surroundings. This is because the women wake up at dawn to sweep the community and dispose off household rubbish in an appropriate manner.

To maintain the spotlessly clean status of Holuta, the people take part in a compulsory communal labour every Tuesday. With a population of about 500, Holuta is on record for its bountiful production of cocoa, oil palm, cassava, maize, yam, fruits and vegetables which are sold readily in the nearby Kpedze market, and sometimes in Ho.

In a chat during a visit to the community by the Daily Graphic, a few days ago, the assemblyman, Pascal Newton, attributed the cleanliness of Holuta to the high sense of communal spirit of the people, who he said loved their environment and cherished their peace.

The brilliant scenic beauty of Holuta is evident in the Fiamake Mountain which surrounds the entire community with thick and dense green vegetative cover.

Tourism

Over the years, the natural fortress around Holuta prevented enemies from invading the area. Meanwhile, the clear Wutor River running swiftly over massive rock formations attract people from far and near, while the Holuta-Aboeta Waterfalls is an asset with a huge potential for wealth from tourism.

In a timely move, a huge tourism development project is set to take off in the area in August, this year.

The project would install thrilling recreation facilities, such as hanging chairs and walkways around the waterfall without disturbing the eco-system.
In Holuta, it is forbidden to kill pythons.

Legend has it that when the people of Holuta arrived at their present location from Notsie in Togo centuries ago, the leader sat under a tree, unaware that he was sitting on the head of the python (Hor) inside a hole.

The python suddenly pushed the old man off the entrance of the hole and in the ensuing fight the old man defeated the reptile. So, Holuta means the head of the python.

Harmless pythons still visit the community randomly and play with the people. It takes only five minutes to walk from Holuta to Klo-Mayonday in the Republic of Togo.

The other sister communities at the Togo side are Worme and Kpadape. It is common to see people crossing from one side of the border to the other.

The well-preserved old buildings are also a delight to watch. In Holuta those who engage in crime do so at their own peril. The landmark features in the community include the Ghana Immigration Service post and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) post, both of which are guaranteed sources of security.
