Improving healthcare delivery in Northern Region: Health directorates receive motorbikes from CRS

Catholic Relief Services (CRS), a non-governmental organisation, has presented 20 motorbikes to District and Municipal Health Directorates in the Northern Region to enhance maternal and child healthcare in the area.

The motorbikes are intended to facilitate easy movement within hard-to-reach communities for medical outreach programmes.

The donation formed part of the Holistic Opportunities for Positive Engagement in Maternal and Child Health (HOPE-MCH) project being implemented in 10 districts across four regions.

The $3.5 million project, funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is a collaborative effort involving CRS, the Hunger Project, MAP International, National Ambulance Service (NAS), Ghana Health Service (GHS) and Vitamin Angels.

The project seeks to enhance access to and the utilisation of maternal and newborn services for children under three years old, mothers and pregnant women, as well as addressing key factors affecting maternal and child health.

It is a one-year project with an allocation of GH¢171,510.74 for servicing agreements in each beneficiary district.

The beneficiary districts include Yendi Municipal, East Mamprusi Municipal, Mamprugu Moagduri District, Gushagu District, West Mamprusi Municipal, Nanumba North District, Talensi District, Nabdam District, Central Gonja District and North Gonja District.

Presenting the items in Tamale, the Technical Advisor to the HOPE-MCH project, Abdul Ganiw Konlan, said the intervention would significantly assist health staff in reaching remote areas of the districts.

He added that it would also support capacity-building activities for health staff and improve healthcare delivery throughout the districts.

"We hope these interventions will contribute to ensuring that no woman dies during childbirth and every child survives and reaches their full growth potential," he said.

Receiving the items, the Northern Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Abdulai Abukari, lauded CRS for the gesture and pledged to ensure judicious use of the motorbikes.

He indicated that the motorbikes would improve service delivery and aid in supervision, particularly in remote areas of the region.
